Kitchen Island Remodel: What to Decide Before You Build One

By Valleywise Design and Remodel. ROC CR-60 #339879 · ROC KB-2 #357856. Updated 2026-09-03.

A kitchen island remodel comes down to four decisions: walking room, seating, the countertop slab, and the cabinet footprint. Get those four right and the finish choices become much easier. Valleywise Design and Remodel builds islands across Phoenix and Scottsdale with countertops cut through our Chandler fabrication shop and cabinets planned to the room.

The island is often the part a homeowner has pictured the longest. It also has the most ways to be slightly wrong. A top seats three when the family hosts six. The aisle feels fine until the dishwasher opens. A seam lands where every eye sees it. These decisions belong in the plan before anything is ordered.

How much space do you need around a kitchen island?

The working aisle needs enough room for appliance doors, cabinet drawers, and more than one person. We measure this inside the room with the appliance clearances included. If the room cannot support the island in the drawing, a peninsula may fit better.

How many people can sit at the island?

The seating count should come before the cabinet run. Seats need width, knee space, and a path behind them. When the desired seating count makes the aisle too tight, the tradeoff becomes visible before the order is placed.

One slab or a seam?

An island longer than the slab needs a seam. The seam location and the direction of the veining determine whether it disappears or becomes the first thing you notice. Both decisions are better made in front of the full slab than from a small sample.

Do the island cabinets need to be custom?

Standard RTA cabinet sizes work when the footprint is conventional. Custom cabinets earn their place when seating wraps a corner, storage needs to use every inch, or the room has dimensions that standard boxes cannot solve cleanly. Valleywise works with both and will say which one the room needs.

What has to run to the island?

An island may need power, plumbing, ventilation, or appliance connections. Those decisions change the floor and rough work, so they must be made before demolition. They also belong as visible line items on the estimate.

Choose the island top before the cabinets are ordered

The slab determines more than color. It determines the usable length, possible seams, overhang, and support. Our Phoenix showroom holds about 80 full quartz slabs so the choice can happen at full scale before the cabinet order is locked.

Common questions about a kitchen island remodel

How long does a kitchen island remodel take?

It depends on whether the island is part of a full kitchen and whether the cabinets are custom. Ask for a schedule that covers construction and material lead times for your island.

Can I add an island to a kitchen that never had one?

Often, yes. The available aisle space and any plumbing or electrical needs decide whether it makes sense.

Should the island match the other counters?

It can match or contrast. The better answer comes from seeing the full slabs beside the cabinet finish.
